-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I am using the 2.0.36pre7 kernel that comes with RedHat 5.2 on a DEC HiNote VP laptop. I installed PCMCIA services 3.0.5 during the RedHat install. The PNY compact flash memory, which is available and CompUSA, SEARS and other stores, comes with an adaptor to fit in a standard PCMCIA slot. Linux recognizes the card when the compact flash and the adaptor is inserted. However, the laptop beeps with a high then low beep which should mean the card wasn't initialized properly. For some reason it still works. Linux automatically creates a block device (/dev/hdc in my case.) Refer to the PCMCIA-HOWTO for more information about PCMCIA services. Then I "mount /dev/hdc /mnt/flash" It appears to be a ms-dos 8.3 file system. The files are stored in a directory that is named "im??????". The last couple characters in the directory name vary. I'm not sure why. The files are stored as jpeg images within the directory and are named consecutively, i.e.: dsc00001.jpg dsc00002.jpg ... dsc00010.jpg dsc00011.jpg Files can be copied to and from the memory, just like any other block device. If the directory is present without any files in it, then the HP C30 complains that the card needs to be formated. To format the card, simply remove the directory. This appears to be what the camera does. If a middle file is deleted, I think the camera actually renumbers the files so that they are in consecutive order. Incidentally, I was able to take an image from the camera, alter with GIMP, and copy it back to the flash memory with the name dsc00001.jpg. I was able to view the altered image on the camera but certain things were a little strange. For instance, the image turned up as a blue sqaure in the small "photo proof" mode. You may use any of the information contained in this e-mail and post it on the web but please label it as being anecdotal. I am not a programmer. The only programming experience I've had was in Turbo Pascal and therefore doesn't actually qualify as programming experience :) [Cut some stuff -- md] Yours truly, Jeff Miller -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGPfreeware 5.5.3i for non-commercial use iQA/AwUBNpBZzQpo4SHEDZxZEQKzZACcDO0L8sqnf5+TD9mat8A2ibu5jyAAoPsQ ED7Z8cqImbrfho+X3ipo88sP =zFVp -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
